Poor street vendors in Lahore have raised concerns over a reported requirement to install lighting boards featuring Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s picture on model carts.
According to vendors operating around Garhi Shahu Cup Store, the boards must carry the Chief Minister’s picture along with the corporation’s monogram.
The vendors alleged that they are being threatened with cancellation of their model carts if they fail to install the boards or pay for them.
They further claimed that Rs. 12,000 is being collected from each vendor in the name of the lighting board.
The vendors said the model cart scheme was supposed to provide a livelihood opportunity and relief to low-income workers, but the additional expense has placed an unnecessary financial burden on them.
They demanded that the Punjab government review the requirement and ensure that the model cart initiative remains affordable for poor vendors.
The vendors also called for the removal of what they described as unnecessary conditions and additional costs associated with the scheme.
