Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the Inspector General of Punjab Police a one-week deadline to identify and remove corrupt elements from the police force.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting on law and order, where the chief minister ordered strict action against officers accused of corruption and instructed that notorious police officers should not be appointed as Station House Officers (SHOs).
Maryam also directed the police leadership to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against crimes targeting women and children. She sought a comprehensive plan to control such crimes and ordered strict action against those involved in them.
The meeting also approved several measures to improve policing. The operational control of Dolphin Police will be linked with the relevant police stations, while a September 30 deadline was set to equip Punjab Police personnel with body cameras.
The chief minister also ordered strict action over incidents involving prisoner escapes and approved the installation of GPS trackers and cameras in prisoner vans.
She directed police to intensify operations against burglary and ordered a cleanup operation to eliminate crime in Sheikhupura.
During the meeting, the Punjab IG briefed the chief minister that robbery cases had declined by 54 percent, murder cases by 35 percent, car robbery cases by 46 percent and motorcycle theft cases by 53 percent.
Maryam said district police officers would be held accountable in areas where crime rates remain high.
“Children and women are my red line,” she said, stressing that nobody involved in crimes against them would be spared. She added that maintaining law and order and protecting the lives and property of citizens remained the government’s top priority.
