Karachi is facing a fresh water supply setback after a power fault at a key pumping station caused a shortage of 54 million gallons per day (MGD), the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said on Sunday.

According to the utility, electricity supply to the North East Karachi (NEK) Pumping Station was disrupted in the early hours of May 31 due to a fault in a main cable operated by K-Electric.

The outage affected operations at the K-II Pumping Station and partially disrupted water distribution across the city.

KWSC said the power supply was suspended at 3:27 am, prompting immediate contact with K-Electric. A technical team later confirmed that the interruption was caused by a fault in the primary electricity cable feeding the K-II station.

The water utility said K-Electric arranged an emergency alternative supply and later restored partial electricity through the K-III feeder at around 5:50 am. However, the limited capacity of the backup arrangement prevented full restoration of pumping operations.

KWSC warned that the current shortfall could increase if the cable fault is not permanently repaired without delay. The utility added that water supply schedules in several parts of Karachi may be affected as a result.

The corporation has urged K-Electric to undertake emergency repairs and said it is monitoring the situation while deploying available resources to minimise disruption.

The latest disruption comes as Karachi enters the second month of a severe water crisis that has left thousands of households dependent on water tankers and private suppliers.

Residents in many areas continue to face dry taps, long waits for tanker deliveries, and rising water costs.

The crisis began in late March and has persisted due to repeated pipeline leaks, transmission line bursts, pumping station outages, and technical faults across the city’s water infrastructure.

The latest power-related disruption is expected to place additional pressure on an already strained water supply system, raising concerns about further shortages in the coming days.
