The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert over the possible risk of glacial lake outburst floods in the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as rain is expected from August 31 to September 4 in several cities. According to the alert, rising temperatures and rainfall from the night of August 31 to September 4 may accelerate glacier melt. The authority warned that the volume and water level of glacial lakes could increase, creating the risk of sudden flooding and fast-moving water in case of a glacier lake outburst.

The PDMA has alerted the administrations of Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan and Mansehra and directed them to ensure continuous monitoring of sensitive GLOF sites and timely warnings.

Officials have advised the public to avoid going near rivers, streams, glacial lakes and narrow mountain valleys. Tourists and travellers have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, camping and trekking in dangerous areas.

Earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority’s National Emergencies Operation Centre issued a weather outlook from August 30 to September 4, forecasting thunderstorms, strong winds and rain in parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

The NDMA said several districts of Punjab may receive rain with thunder and wind, including Murree, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Khushab, Sargodha and Gujrat.

Rain is also expected in Sialkot, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Narowal, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Lahore, Kasur and Okara, while most parts of Punjab are likely to remain hot and humid with a rise in daytime temperatures.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain with thunder and wind is expected in several areas, with heavy showers possible at some locations. Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Bajaur, Shangla, Battagram, Buner and Mansehra are among the districts likely to receive rain.

The NDMA also forecast rain with thunder and wind in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, with heavy showers possible in some areas.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain is expected in Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Ghizer, Diamer and Astore, while in Azad Kashmir, showers are likely in Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Poonch, Bagh, Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber.

The NDMA said both regions are likely to remain hot and humid with rising daytime temperatures.

In Sindh, most areas are expected to stay hot and humid with an increase in daytime temperature.
