Karachi has recorded extremely low monsoon rainfall this year, marking a weather pattern last witnessed nearly 29 years ago in 1997.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a similar situation occurred in 1997 when El Niño conditions were active and Karachi received very little monsoon rainfall.
The department said no rain-producing weather system is expected to affect Karachi during the remaining days of August. Chances of monsoon rainfall are also extremely low during September.
PMD attributed the lack of rainfall to active El Niño conditions over the sea. Karachi also receives rainfall when low-pressure systems develop over the sea and move into favorable positions.
However, no such activity is currently being observed over the Arabian Sea, reducing the chances of rain in the city.
The Met Office said the monsoon season generally continues from July 15 to September 15 in Karachi and other parts of the country. In upper and northern areas of Pakistan, monsoon systems can continue until September 30.
