The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert across Punjab during the Eid holidays, warning that moderate to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist from May 25 to May 31.
According to the advisory issued on May 21, a high-pressure system is expected to develop in the upper atmosphere on May 25 and intensify on May 26, causing temperatures across several districts of Punjab to rise significantly above normal levels.
The PDMA stated that temperatures in Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Kasur and Faisalabad are expected to remain 5°C to 7°C above normal, with maximum temperatures likely to range between 42°C and 45°C.
The advisory further stated that temperatures in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Pakpattan, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Sargodha, Jauharabad, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Sahiwal may remain 4°C to 6°C above normal, with maximum temperatures expected to range between 47°C and 50°C.
The authority also warned that night temperatures are likely to rise during the forecast period. The PDMA advised the public, especially children, women, and senior citizens, to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm and to stay hydrated.
Farmers were advised to manage crop activities according to weather conditions and ensure proper care of livestock during the heatwave.
The advisory further directed district administrations and relevant departments to ensure round-the-clock staffing at emergency operation centers, strengthen coordination with rescue agencies, issue timely public safety advisories through electronic and social media, and deploy additional staff and resources in high-risk areas.
