The Punjab government has requested the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Rangers to support provincial police in maintaining peace and order during Muharram across the province.

According to an official letter sent to the federal government, the Punjab Home Department stated that the assistance of the armed forces and paramilitary Rangers has been sought for deployment in all districts of Punjab to ensure foolproof security arrangements.

The department said the request was made on the recommendation of the police to strengthen coordination among law enforcement agencies during the religious month.

Officials emphasized that all law enforcement agencies will work together to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram, including security for processions and religious gatherings.

Earlier, Punjab Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim reviewed the security plan for Muharram and directed officers to strictly implement security protocols across the province.

He confirmed that police will be supported by the Army, Rangers, and other agencies during the Ashura period, with additional personnel deployed at sensitive locations, including Lahore.

The IGP instructed authorities to complete security arrangements for majalis and processions ahead of Muharram, warning that heightened vigilance was necessary due to the current regional security environment.

He said anti-state and extremist elements may attempt to disrupt peace through terrorism or sectarian provocation, adding that Punjab Police remains fully prepared to counter any such threats and maintain law and order throughout the period.
