The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast dust-thunderstorms and rain with occasional gaps in several upper parts of the country from the night of May 18 to May 23, bringing temporary relief from the ongoing intense heatwave.

According to the PMD, a westerly weather system is expected to enter northwestern regions of Pakistan on May 18 night and remain active in upper areas until May 23.

The Met Office said dust-thunderstorms, rain, and isolated hailstorms are expected in multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Shangla, Buner, Kohistan, Malakand, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Balakot, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Peshawar, Bajaur, Mohmand, Orakzai, Khyber, Kohat, Kurram, Hangu, Waziristan, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, and Karak.

Rain and thunderstorms are also forecast in Punjab and Islamabad including Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Khushab, Jauharabad, Bhakkar, Layyah, Sargodha, Mianwali, Faisalabad, Jhang, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Okara, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, and Narowal.

The PMD further predicted similar weather conditions in Gilgit-Baltistan including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Guanche, and Shigar, as well as in Azad Kashmir including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, and Mirpur.

The weather department warned that windstorms and lightning could damage weak structures including electric poles, billboards, and solar panels during the forecast period. The PMD also cautioned that moderate to isolated heavy rainfall could trigger landslides in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.

Tourists and travelers have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period, while farmers have been asked to manage agricultural activities according to the weather conditions. The Met Office added that very hot weather is likely to continue in southern parts of the country in the coming days.
