Pakistan Ulema Council Chairman Maulana Tahir Ashrafi has said that efforts are underway to bring social media under control while reaffirming the country’s religious scholars’ opposition to terrorism, extremism, and suicide attacks.
Speaking through the declaration issued after the Ulema and Mashaikh Conference, Ashrafi said the participants strongly condemned all forms of terrorism, extremism, and suicide bombings.
He paid tribute to those defending the country and to the martyrs, saying they deserve the nation’s respect and that their families have the support of the religious leadership.
Ashrafi said that anyone who violates Paigham-e-Pakistan would not receive the support of the Pakistan Ulema Council.
He added that serious efforts are being made to regulate social media.
Referring to content recently aired on a television channel, Ashrafi said state institutions had taken notice of the matter and carried out action.
He also said that 8,000 religious scholars have been martyred.
Ashrafi said the Chief of Army Staff had prevented the Muslim Ummah from being drawn into conflict. He added that both the army chief and the prime minister had played a role in keeping the country away from war.
He also said efforts were continuing day and night to resolve issues facing religious seminaries, adding that he himself had studied at a religious seminary.
Ashrafi said religious leaders are prepared to go wherever necessary in the interest of peace.
He added that senior religious scholars would continue to play every possible role in promoting peace and said they are ready to travel anywhere if it helps restore peace and stability in the country.
