Senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said the Pakistan Peoples Party government in Sindh is continuing efforts to support women through various welfare initiatives.

Speaking at a ceremony where the provincial government distributed free electric scooters to women, he said the scheme aims to improve mobility and independence.

According to the minister, around 150 women in Sindh previously held motorbike licenses, but now about 20,000 women have applied for driving licenses following the launch of the initiative.

He said the government is providing scooters, helmets, licenses, and training free of cost, adding that the scheme does not involve any donor agency or require recommendations for eligibility.

Registration for the scooters has also been made free.

Memon urged women to actively use the scooters and follow road safety measures.

Highlighting past initiatives, he said the PPP has introduced several programs for women’s welfare, including the Benazir Income Support Program, which he said has received recognition from international institutions.

He also referred to efforts made during the tenure of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, citing measures such as women police stations, a women’s bank, and the lady health workers program.

The minister added that the Sindh government is also working on a housing project aimed at providing free homes to 2.1 million families.
