Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that Karachi’s University Road will be reopened to traffic by the end of July as work on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project continues.
Speaking during a visit to the project site, Memon said construction activities were underway around the clock to complete the scheme. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by commuters due to delays in the project’s completion.
The minister said the Sindh government had upgraded roads across the province using its own resources and was continuing development work despite poor conditions on roads that fall under the administrative control of the federal government in Sindh.
He also revealed that a new terminal is being built on the Northern Bypass to help reduce traffic congestion in Karachi.
Commenting on the city’s importance, Memon said Karachi carries a significant share of the country’s employment and healthcare burden as people from across Pakistan come to the city in search of work and medical facilities. He said this factor should be taken into account when comparing Karachi with other cities.
The senior minister also criticized the alignment of the motorway network, saying Karachi should have been directly connected to the motorway system from within the city.
Addressing Karachi’s water issues, Memon said the city faces a 20 percent water shortage because of its location at the tail end of the country’s water distribution system.
