A 22-year-old patient allegedly underwent a second surgery after doctors left surgical forceps inside his chest during an open-heart operation at a cardiology institute in Faisalabad.
According to reports, Saqlain, a resident of Toba Tek Singh, was receiving treatment for a hole in the heart when cardiologist Dr Zaigham Rasool performed surgery on April 4.
During the procedure, medical staff allegedly failed to remove a surgical instrument before closing the patient’s chest.
The incident surfaced after Saqlain complained of severe chest pain following the operation. Doctors later conducted an X-ray, which reportedly revealed the forceps inside his chest.
Medical staff then carried out another surgery on April 23 to remove the instrument.
The administration of the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology (FIC) launched an inquiry after the patient developed complications. According to Medical Superintendent Dr Nadeem, the investigation found that staff nurses failed to properly count surgical instruments after the operation.
Dr Nadeem confirmed that the two staff nurses involved in the case had been sent to the secretary’s disposal pending further action.
