Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has failed JerryRigEverything’s durability test after its inner display suffered permanent damage during a reverse bend.

The result stands out because the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 8 (wide) recently survived the same type of testing, including reverse bends, grit, and other stress tests. Previous large-screen Galaxy Fold models, including the original Galaxy Fold, also completed similar tests without major damage or loss of functionality.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra costs $2,099 and includes several durability-focused “upgrades.”

During the test, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra survived the first reverse bend while fully opened.

A second, harder bend caused permanent damage.

The inner display briefly flickered before turning completely black and becoming unusable. The phone’s body also showed noticeable flex when bent backward.

The exact cause of the failure remains unclear.

Possible explanations include damage to the display flex cable, the fold-detection sensor, or internal pressure from the hinge against the extremely thin folding display.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra measures just 4.1mm thick when unfolded, suggesting Samsung may be approaching the limits of how thin it can make the device while maintaining structural strength under extreme force.

The regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 survived similar backward bending while keeping its chassis and display functional, showing that durability can differ even between devices from the same generation.

Foldable smartphones remain more mechanically complex than standard phones because they combine two displays, a hinge, and components that must remain precisely aligned. That complexity can also make repairs expensive.

Samsung charges $639 in the US to replace the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra’s inner display module. Replacing the outer display costs $149.

Samsung also provides one free inner screen protector replacement during the first 12 months of ownership. After that, replacing the protector costs around $19.
