The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has reopened the city’s only multi-storey parking plaza at Fawara Chowk after keeping it sealed for 20 days over unpaid dues of Rs. 48.2 million.
The authority has taken direct control of the facility and introduced a self-collection system, with RDA staff now managing daily operations and parking revenue.
According to official sources, the previous contractor had failed to clear outstanding payments for seven months. After the matter reached court, the contractor reportedly offered to pay Rs. 15 million, but the RDA rejected the proposal and demanded full payment.
The parking plaza was sealed on July 12. Although the RDA later secured a court ruling in its favor, the facility remained closed for 20 days, causing an estimated revenue loss of more than Rs. 100,000 per day.
The closure also caused inconvenience for motorists in the busy Fawara Chowk area, as the plaza is Rawalpindi’s only dedicated multi-storey parking facility.
The plaza resumed operations on August 1. To monitor revenue collection and ensure timely deposits into the authority’s accounts, the RDA has formed a Vigilance and Revenue Collection Committee.
Officials said the parking contract will now be awarded through an open auction scheduled for August 17.
