The Punjab government has decided to hand over all honor killing cases across the province to the Crime Control Department in a major shift in how such crimes will be investigated.
According to sources, every murder committed in the name of honor will now be probed by the CCD. The department had previously been focused mainly on organized crime, habitual offenders and narcotics-related cases.
The move comes under the provincial government led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and signals an effort to deal with honor killing cases through a more specialized policing unit.
The development also expands the role of the CCD, which has recently been highlighting its performance in tackling serious crime in Punjab.
Earlier, the department claimed a sharp drop in crime during the first three months of 2026. According to a CCD spokesperson, serious crimes in the province fell by 56 percent during the period compared to the same quarter last year.
The spokesperson said several categories recorded notable declines. Murders during robberies dropped by 50 percent, while injury-related incidents fell by 68 percent. Overall robbery cases were down 81 percent, while street crime and snatching incidents declined by 76 percent.
Motorbike snatching fell by 43 percent and motorbike theft dropped by 51 percent. Car theft was reported to be down 60 percent, while car snatching declined by 67 percent. House burglaries also recorded a 47 percent reduction.
The decision to place honor killing investigations under the CCD is likely to be seen as an attempt to strengthen the official response to one of the province’s most sensitive violent crimes.
