The Punjab government has finalized Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Basant 2027 and allocated Lahore’s Jallo Park area for the production of permitted kite string.

Under the proposed arrangements, all kite-string manufacturers will be required to follow the government-approved SOPs, while authorities will take measures to control the prices of kites and string. Production of kite string at the designated area is expected to begin in October 2027.

The move comes as the provincial government prepares for the next edition of Basant after Lahore hosted the traditional festival earlier this year following a long-standing ban. The government has introduced strict safety rules to prevent injuries and deaths associated with dangerous kite string.

The Punjab government has already issued safety guidelines for Basant 2027, including restrictions on kite flying from unsafe rooftops, overcrowding and the use of loud sound systems. Parents and guardians have also been directed to supervise children, while first-aid facilities must be available at permitted kite-flying locations.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced that Basant will return to Lahore in 2027, with the festival scheduled to be held over three days. She said the event would once again bring color, culture, music and festivities to the city.

The government is also expected to maintain strict controls on kite and string manufacturing, sale and use to ensure that the festival remains safe while preserving the traditional celebration.
