The Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) has approved a Rs. 36 billion PC-I for the Daducha Dam Water Supply Project, which will provide an additional 35 million gallons of water per day to Rawalpindi city and the cantonment.
Under the project, authorities will transport water from Daducha Dam through a 28-kilometre pipeline, install filtration plants and develop a distribution network to supply the city and cantonment areas.
The project cost will be shared equally between Rawalpindi city and the cantonment, with Rs. 18 billion allocated to each.
However, the Punjab Cabinet will decide whether the federal or provincial government will finance the cantonment’s Rs. 18 billion share. It will also determine how the additional water supply will be divided between the city and cantonment.
The Punjab Irrigation Department is currently constructing Daducha Dam, while the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) will develop the infrastructure needed to transport and distribute the water. The project aims to ease the severe water shortage affecting Rawalpindi and the cantonment and provide residents with a more reliable water supply.
