Pakistan is set to host the 14th South Asian Games in March 2027, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approving Rs. 11 billion in funding for the multi-sport event.
According to sources, the prime minister has directed authorities to start preparations immediately, with funds to be released in phases for stadium upgrades, logistics, ceremonies, and administrative arrangements.
A South Asian Games Secretariat will also be established in Islamabad to oversee and coordinate preparations.
The event will mark the return of the South Asian Games to Pakistan after 22 years. Officials say venues in Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad are fully operational for the competition.
More than 3,500 athletes from eight countries are expected to take part in 27 disciplines, including large contingents from India and Afghanistan.
Security has emerged as a key focus ahead of the event, with the local organizing committee planning Games Villages under strict protection for visiting athletes and officials.
The opening ceremony in Lahore is expected to be one of the major highlights of the event and is likely to draw strong viewership across South Asia.
Officials view the Games as a major opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its sporting infrastructure and hosting capacity, while also promoting regional engagement through sport.
The event is also being seen as an important platform for emerging athletes from the region, with preparations now formally underway following the release of federal funding.
