The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) announced that the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Hockey League will be held in the first quarter of 2027, calling the development the beginning of a new era for the country’s national sport.

In a brief statement, the federation said it was working with its partners to make the tournament a landmark success for Pakistan hockey.

“A new era for Pakistan Hockey! Something big is coming! InshaAllah, in the first quarter of 2027, the Pakistan Hockey League will come into action,” the PHF said.

“The Pakistan Hockey Federation, together with its partners, is working tirelessly to make this league a landmark success story for Pakistani hockey.

“From grassroots development and young talent to professional coaching, better structures and international exposure, a lot of good things are happening in Pakistan hockey.”

The league has been under consideration for several years. A revised model of the Pakistan Hockey League has been discussed since 2016, but the proposal was repeatedly shelved because of different issues, including permissions, scheduling and financial constraints.

The proposal gained momentum again in 2022, when local media reported that details of the league were expected to be announced in June that year, with the tournament planned for September.

Reports at the time also suggested that an office had been established in Lahore in early 2022. The PHF had also hired former Pakistan Super League (PSL) project director Salman Sarwar Butt as one of its consultants.

However, the proposed league ultimately did not take place.

The PHF has now confirmed that the inaugural Pakistan Hockey League is planned for the first quarter of 2027 as part of its efforts to develop the sport through grassroots programs, young talent, professional coaching, improved structures and greater international exposure.
