Microsoft says physical Xbox games should have remained playable during the major Xbox outage earlier this week, even though some players reported that disc-based games also stopped working.

The outage lasted for much of July 27 and affected sign-ins, game libraries and game launches. Xbox technology chief Scott Van Vliet said the disruption was caused by a licensing service outside Xbox that the platform depends on.

Van Vliet told The Verge that Xbox is investigating reports from players who could not launch games from physical discs during the outage.

He said disc-based entitlement checks are designed so they should not stop users from accessing their games when Xbox services are unavailable. Physical game entitlements are supposed to be stored locally on the console so the games can continue working offline.

During the outage, however, that system did not work correctly for some users.

Microsoft plans to fix the issue in an upcoming update so locally stored disc entitlements continue to work properly during future service disruptions.

Van Vliet previously explained that an external licensing service began failing late on July 26.

That caused some sign-in attempts to fail and disrupted services that rely on entitlement checks, including displaying users’ full game libraries and launching games they own.

The same problem also affected some publishing and store partners that depend on the underlying systems. Microsoft restored Xbox services on July 27.

The outage comes at a difficult time for Xbox, which is already dealing with falling gaming revenue, higher console prices, leadership changes, and plans for further job cuts.
