The Lahore district administration sealed a private water park in Batapur on Monday after a nine-year-old girl allegedly got trapped in a drainage pipe and died due to the alleged negligence of park officials, officials said on Wednesday.

Batapur police arrested three officials of Sozo Water Park after registering a criminal case against them. Police said the park administration allegedly began draining a swimming pool without first evacuating children who were still inside the water.

According to police, the powerful suction from a high-capacity drainage pump pulled the girl into the pool’s drainage pipe, where she became trapped.

Rescue teams searched for her for about 40 to 50 minutes before they recovered her from the pipe, but they could not revive her.

Following the incident, the district administration immediately sealed the water park and suspended all activities.

A spokesperson said the facility was sealed on the same day and that authorities initiated legal action against the management over alleged negligence.

Police registered the case at Batapur Police Station under Section 322 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim’s mother.

The complainant alleged that the girl died because of the water park administration’s negligence and named the park’s manager, security in-charge and CCTV in-charge in the FIR.

The spokesperson for DIG Operations said all three nominated suspects had been arrested. He added that the girl fell into the drainage pipe and that no safety net had been installed over it.

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said investigators are examining the circumstances of the incident, including the decision to drain the pool while children were still inside and whether the park ignored mandatory safety measures.

He said police would take strict action against those responsible and ensure justice for the victim.
