A man has sought more than Rs. 172 million in compensation over the death of his father in an accident allegedly caused by inadequate safety measures at the Red Line BRT construction site in Karachi.
A senior civil judge in Malir issued notices to the Sindh government, Malir Cantonment Board, Red Line project director, contractor, and other parties in the case. The court has summoned them for September 21.
According to the petitioner’s lawyer, Usman Farooq, Shahid was returning home late at night with his wife and child in January when his vehicle collided with a barrier placed in the middle of the road near Jinnah Avenue.
Shahid died in the accident, while his wife and child sustained injuries.
Farooq told the court that the barriers placed on the road had no reflectors or warning signs. He said the area also lacked streetlights, making the barrier difficult to see at night.
The lawyer argued that the accident occurred due to negligence and inadequate safety arrangements during construction of the Red Line project.
He maintained that those responsible for the construction work were required to provide a safe route and proper safety measures for people using the road.
According to the petitioner, Shahid was the sole breadwinner of the family and his death resulted from the administration’s negligence.
The family has asked the court to order the respondents to pay Rs. 172.12 million in compensation.
