The Sindh government has released full funding for the long delayed Munawar Chowrangi Underpass project in Karachi as authorities push to complete the infrastructure scheme by June 30.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that the entire amount required for the project has now been released to the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) to ensure completion of the underpass and opening for traffic before the deadline.
According to the mayor, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed authorities to avoid further delays in ongoing infrastructure projects.
The development comes months after the chief minister, during a review meeting in February, directed officials to complete the Munawar Chowrangi underpasses within one month and open them to the public.
At the time, officials had informed the chief minister that the Rs. 2.02 billion project was around 75 percent complete, while only Rs. 300 million had been released by the government.
The Sindh government has faced criticism in recent years over delays in completion of major road and infrastructure projects across Karachi, with several schemes missing repeated deadlines and causing prolonged traffic disruptions for residents.
