The Punjab government has proposed an underground parking plaza between Data Darbar and Bhatti Gate to address the long-standing parking problem in one of Lahore’s busiest areas. The proposal calls for construction of the project on 22 kanals of land and has been submitted to the Punjab chief minister for approval.
The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) have estimated the project cost at more than Rs. 8.225 billion. The LDA director general has also sought approval to include the project in the development program for the current financial year and allocate funds for its construction.
The proposed parking plaza will have three underground levels, along with an intelligent transportation system (ITS), automated parking facilities and charging stations for electric vehicles.
The facility is expected to accommodate 600 cars and 1,700 motorcycles, providing parking for visitors to Data Darbar as well as residents and businesses in the surrounding areas.
According to sources, the proposal follows the Bhati Underpass and Data Darbar upgrade projects. The government is also considering assigning the construction work to TEPA instead of the LDA Engineering Wing. The project will proceed subject to approval from the relevant authorities.
