A new leak has revealed more details about the Honor Magic 9 Pro’s camera system, covering both the front and rear cameras.

The phone is expected to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 (SM8975) chipset and could introduce a new type of front camera to Android smartphones.

According to the leak, the Honor Magic 9 Pro will use a 1:1 square selfie camera sensor, which would make it the first Android phone to ship with this format.

A square sensor can capture a wider field of view and make it easier to switch between portrait and landscape framing without rotating the phone.

This could be particularly useful for group selfies and vlogging.

The leak also claims that the front camera borrows some technology developed for Honor’s upcoming Robot Phone.

Honor has reportedly been testing square front cameras for some time. Earlier reports suggested that the standard Magic 9 could also use a similar sensor.

Oppo has also been linked with a square selfie camera for its upcoming Find X10 series, while Vivo is reportedly preparing its own version for next year.

The Honor Magic 9 Pro is expected to feature a 200MP main camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor, an f/1.57 aperture, and 3-degree optical image stabilization.

A 50MP ultrawide camera will reportedly join it.

The third rear camera is expected to be a 200MP periscope telephoto sensor measuring 1/1.4 inches with an f/2.6 aperture.

This aligns with earlier reports that Honor was preparing a dual 200MP camera setup for the Magic 9 Pro.

Honor’s partnership with ARRI is also expected to extend to the Pro model, potentially bringing improvements to color science and video processing.

The Honor Magic 9 series is expected to launch in China around October, with more details likely to emerge as the launch approaches.
