HMD has launched the HMD 105 4G School Edition, a feature phone designed for parents who want their children to stay connected without giving them access to common smartphone distractions.
The phone supports calls and text messages but removes several features available on regular HMD and Nokia feature phones.
HMD has removed the web browser, recording function, and even the long-running Snake game from the School Edition.
Instead, the phone includes a PIN-protected parental control system. Parents can use these controls to disable Bluetooth, MMS, and the FM radio.
The restrictions are designed to give students access to basic communication while giving parents more control over other features.
The hardware is largely carried over from the standard HMD 105 4G.
The School Edition features a 2.4-inch display with a 240 × 320 resolution, along with 64MB of RAM and 128MB of internal storage.
A microSD card slot supports up to 32GB of additional storage.
The phone supports 2G, 3G, and 4G networks as well as Bluetooth 5.0, although parents can disable Bluetooth through the parental controls.
It also includes a USB-C charging port and a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired headphones. The phone can store up to 2,000 contacts.
The HMD 105 4G School Edition packs a removable 1,450mAh battery.
HMD claims it can provide up to 15 days of standby time.
The company has not yet announced the phone’s price or provided a complete list of countries where it will be available.
