The federal cabinet has approved the draft Defense Forces Act 2026 and amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010 as part of legislative changes following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday.
The cabinet meeting was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Defense Forces Act 2026 has been drafted to establish the administrative framework relating to the newly created position of Chief of Defense Forces and the Chief of Defense Forces Headquarters.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the legislation has been prepared as a continuation of changes introduced through the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
Following cabinet approval, the draft Defense Forces Act 2026 will be presented before Parliament for approval during its ongoing session.
The cabinet also approved amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, describing the changes as necessary following the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The amended National Command Authority Act will also be presented before Parliament for approval. Both legislative measures are now set to move to the parliamentary stage following the cabinet’s approval.
