Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has nominated Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani as the party’s candidate for Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

Gilani, who was elected to the AJK Legislative Assembly on a technocrat reserved seat, is a former AJK education minister.

His nomination comes as the PML-N prepares to form the government after securing a majority in the recent AJK Legislative Assembly elections.

The decision was taken after consultations at the Prime Minister’s House. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the consultations, which were attended by Shah Ghulam Qadir, former AJK prime minister Raja Farooq Haider and AJK Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Tariq Farooq.

Gilani’s nomination is also expected to settle reported differences within the PML-N over the party’s choice for the top AJK government position.

The AJK Legislative Assembly is scheduled to elect the new prime minister on August 28.

With the party holding a majority in the assembly, Gilani is now positioned to become the next prime minister of AJK, subject to the assembly vote.
