Former PM and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has called for strict action against those responsible for the deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.
The fire broke out early Wednesday morning in the ICU of the hospital’s gynaecology ward. According to the initial report, 15 newborn babies died in the incident.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif immediately took notice of the tragedy and summoned an emergency meeting.
The prime minister also suspended Federal Health Secretary Aslam Ghouri and removed him from his post following the incident.
Moreover, Shehbaz Sharif described the fire as a tragic incident and formed a high-level inquiry committee. The committee will investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and determine responsibility.
Reacting to the tragedy, Nawaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the deaths in a statement posted on social media.
He said he was deeply saddened after hearing that innocent newborns had lost their lives in the PIMS fire. He also expressed solidarity with the grieving parents.
Nawaz Sharif prayed for patience and strength for the affected families.
He also urged the government to identify those responsible for the tragedy and take strict action against them.
In addition, the former prime minister called on authorities to introduce effective measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring again in the future.
