Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has passed away at the age of 38 after a prolonged illness.
Zadran had been battling Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), an immune system disorder, and was receiving treatment in the Delhi-NCR region for the past few months.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed his death on X and paid tribute to his services for Afghan cricket, calling him one of the key figures in the country’s early cricket journey.
“Shapoor Zadran was one of the foundation-lying figures of Afghanistan cricket, whose dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment played a vital role in the rise and development of the game in our country,” the ACB wrote.

The board added that Zadran was among the cricketers who helped Afghanistan cricket move toward the international stage.
Zadran represented Afghanistan from 2009 to 2020, taking 43 wickets in 44 ODIs and 37 wickets in 36 T20Is. He also featured in four T20 World Cups between 2010 and 2016, where he claimed nine wickets in nine matches.
He is also remembered for hitting the winning runs in Afghanistan’s historic victory over Scotland at the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Paying tribute to his wider impact, the ACB said Zadran inspired many young Afghan cricketers and cricket followers around the world through his fighting spirit, determination, and love for the game.
