Pakistan pacer Mohammad Abbas reached a major career milestone as he completed 900 wickets in first-class cricket during the opening day of the second Test against England at Lord’s.
The right-arm pacer achieved the landmark in his 222nd first-class match after dismissing England opener Ben Duckett for 17. Earlier, Abbas had removed Emilio Gay for eight to give Pakistan an early breakthrough.
Mohammad Abbas has maintained an impressive first-class bowling average of 20.43 and has registered 57 five-wicket hauls and 15 10-wicket match hauls during his career.
The milestone also placed him fifth among the leading first-class wicket-takers of the 21st century.
England great James Anderson tops the list with 1,181 wickets, followed by South Africa’s Simon Harmer with 1,056 and Sri Lanka’s Malinda Pushpakumara with 1,010. England’s Tim Murtagh is fourth with 959 wickets, while Abbas has moved to 901 and counting.
Mohammad Abbas also put England under early pressure by claiming all three wickets to fall in the opening 13 overs, leaving the home side at 57 for three.
Gay was the first to depart on the final ball of the fifth over after scoring eight from 17 deliveries, including two boundaries. Duckett followed after making 17 from 20 balls with three fours.
England captain Joe Root became Abbas’ third victim after being trapped LBW for four off 13 deliveries.
Jordan Cox and Harry Brook were at the crease when play resumed.
