Three days of heavy monsoon rain have left sewage-contaminated floodwater, waste and dead animals across low-lying areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, raising health concerns.
As the water receded from streets, homes and roads, dead rats, cats and insects, garbage, hazardous waste, mud and sand remained scattered across residential areas, vacant plots and open spaces.
The floodwater also carried mud, sand and waste from storm drains into streets and homes, leaving a foul smell across several neighborhoods. The lack of cleanup operations has further worsened conditions, with people reporting eye, stomach and throat-related illnesses in the affected areas.
With government agencies yet to carry out cleanup operations, people have started clearing streets outside their homes and removing dead animals and waste themselves.
People from Dhoke Khabba, Sadiqabad, Arya Mohalla, Dhoke Ilahi Bakhsh, Qasimabad, Millat Colony, Fazalabad, Peoples Colony, Shalay Valley, Fauji Colony, Dhoke Hasu, Sharon Colony, Dhoke Syedan and Girja Road also staged protests against the district administration and rescue agencies.
Citizen Action Committee Chairman Malik Zaheer Awan said Chah Sultan, Amirpura and Millat Colony remained submerged for three days without receiving assistance from WASA, the Municipal Corporation or rescue agencies.
