Heavy rainfall triggered a flood alert in Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Tuesday after the water level in Nullah Lai rose to dangerous levels, prompting the evacuation of residents from low-lying areas.
Authorities began moving people out of Gwalmandi and Katarian after the stream swelled rapidly following overnight rain that started at 1 am and continued into the morning.
Sirens were also sounded in both cities as officials warned of a possible flood emergency.
According to sources, the Rawalpindi district administration has asked the Pakistan Army for help to deal with the developing situation.
Officials said the water level at Katarian rose to 22 feet, while the level at Gwalmandi reached 17.5 feet.
They added that the water level increased sharply within just half an hour, climbing from 21.5 feet to 22 feet at Katarian and from 15 feet to 17.5 feet at Gwalmandi.
