Dell is bringing back the XPS 13 after briefly dropping the XPS brand last year. The new model returns as a premium Windows ultraportable aimed at buyers looking for a more affordable alternative to Apple’s MacBook Neo.

Dell says the new XPS 13 is the thinnest and lightest version of the laptop it has ever made. It measures 12.7mm thick and weighs 2.2 pounds, making it smaller and lighter than Apple’s rival machine.

The new XPS 13 keeps several premium features from earlier models. It has a CNC aluminum chassis, a 2.5K IPS display, quad speakers, and Wi-Fi 7 support.

Despite its lower price, Dell says it did not want to cut back on key components. The XPS 13 includes a touch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, compared with the MacBook Neo’s 60Hz panel.

The display also covers 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Dell has also included a fully backlit keyboard.

The laptop will be available in two color options: storm and sky.

The base XPS 13 model for students comes with an Intel Core Series 3 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.

Dell says the student discount applies to high school students over 16 and anyone attending a degree-granting college.

Buyers with higher budgets will be able to configure the laptop with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 chips, up to 32GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage.

The laptop includes two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports and a built-in webcam with Windows Hello support.

One missing feature is a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is currently unclear whether Dell will include an adapter in the box or require buyers to purchase one separately.

The MacBook Neo may have one advantage with its fanless design. The XPS 13 uses a dual-fan cooling system instead.

However, active cooling could help in outdoor use, especially when the laptop is being used in direct sunlight.

The new XPS 13 starts at $599 for students and $699 for regular buyers.

The base model, including the $599 student configuration, is expected to arrive in June.

Higher specification versions of the XPS 13 are expected to become available later this summer.
