Authorities in Rawalpindi have launched a crackdown on public transport vehicles operating without fire extinguishers, carrying multiple large gas cylinders, or lacking emergency exits despite repeated warnings.
The operation is being carried out jointly by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Traffic Police, and Civil Defence to ensure compliance with public transport safety regulations.
During the latest inspections, officials impounded 31 vehicles and issued challans to 27 others. The concerned magistrates also imposed cumulative fines of Rs. 510,000 on the violators.
Joint enforcement teams conducted checks on GT Road, Adiala Road, Chakri Road, Murree Expressway, and near Rawat Chowk.
Following the operation, the RTA secretary directed all inspectors to conduct daily field inspections. They were instructed to ensure that public transport vehicles are equipped with modern, functional fire extinguishers and comply with other required safety measures.
Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir said protecting passengers’ lives is a top priority for the administration.
Referring to the recent fire incident involving transport vehicles in Murree, he warned that legal action would be taken against any public transport vehicle found operating without a fire extinguisher.
