Asus has introduced the ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle at Computex as a special edition handheld package celebrating 20 years of its Republic of Gamers brand. The bundle includes the upgraded ROG Xbox Ally X20 and the ROG Xreal R1 Edition 20 gaming AR glasses.
The handheld brings two major upgrades over the earlier ROG Xbox Ally X model: a larger OLED display and new TMR joysticks designed to resist stick drift. However, Asus is offering the device as part of a bundle, and pricing has not been announced yet.
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 features a 7.4-inch OLED Nebula HDR display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The screen is larger than the 7-inch LCD panel used on the earlier ROG Xbox Ally X.
The display supports a 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro, Dolby Vision, and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000. Brightness reaches up to 1,400 nits for HDR content, while the response time is listed at 0.2ms.
Asus also redesigned the thermal system because OLED panels are more sensitive to heat than LCD screens. The updated cooling design sends more airflow toward the APU and helps keep the display surface temperatures lower during heavy use.
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 keeps the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor as the earlier model. The chip has 8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.0GHz clock speed, 24MB cache, 16 graphics cores, and a configurable TDP of 15 W to 35 W.
The handheld also comes with 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. This means the X20 focuses more on display, controls, and design upgrades rather than a major performance jump.
Asus has added TMR joystick technology to the ROG Xbox Ally X20. The company says the sticks offer better precision, smoother tracking, and improved resistance against drift compared with older stick designs.
The ABXY buttons have also been redesigned so they sit flush with the chassis when pressed. The D Pad can switch between 4-way and 8-way control, which should help users move between standard navigation and fighting game inputs.
The Verge noted that Asus has also replaced the earlier Library button with a new Action button for quick screenshots and video recordings.
The ROG Xreal R1 Edition 20 glasses create a virtual 171-inch display with a 240Hz refresh rate. The glasses use micro OLED displays with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 57-degree field of view, and a 0.01ms response time.
They connect to the ROG Xbox Ally X20 through a USB-C cable. Asus notes that the glasses do not work as a standalone device and must be connected to the handheld.
The glasses also include electrochromic lenses with three dimming levels to reduce ambient light. They can be used with other devices through the ROG Control Dock, which includes two HDMI 2.0 ports and a DisplayPort 1.4 connection.
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 includes one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port with DisplayPort, one USB-C 4.0 port with Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort 2.1, and FreeSync support, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack with Hi-Res Audio.
Wireless connectivity includes tri-band Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. The handheld also has a microSD Express slot for faster expandable storage, while users can still replace the internal M.2 SSD.
The device includes stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. It uses the same 80Wh battery as the earlier model and supports 68W fast charging through USB-C.
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is slightly larger and heavier than the earlier ROG Xbox Ally X. It measures 300 x 121 x 27.5 to 51.3mm and weighs 756 grams, compared with 290 x 121 x 27.5 to 50.9mm and 715 grams for the original model.
Asus has not announced the price of the ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle. The company lists it as a 20th anniversary collector’s edition, which may make it more expensive than the standard ROG Xbox Ally X.
