An 88-year-old art teacher in New York has sold a painting for $254,000, roughly Rs. 7 crore, after her family used Google Gemini to help identify its real value.
According to the New York Times , Helene Plotkin bought the painting from a thrift store in White Plains, New York, in 1966 for less than $100. She kept it on her wall for nearly 60 years without knowing it was a valuable artwork.
Last December, her son Barry decided to check whether the painting had any market value. He took a photo of the artwork, uploaded it to Google Gemini, and asked the chatbot to identify it.
Gemini noticed the painting’s bold brushwork and orange accents and linked them to F.C.B. Cadell, a well-known Scottish Colourist from the 1920s.
The AI tool also suggested specific appraisers who could examine the painting.
Experts at auction house Lyon & Turnbull later confirmed that the painting was indeed by F.C.B. Cadell.
Gemini did make one mistake by identifying the subject of the painting incorrectly, but it correctly identified the artist.
With expert confirmation, the painting was eventually sold for $254,000.
Helene Plotkin had one request for the buyer after the sale.
She asked that the painting be displayed publicly someday so that her grandchildren could also see it.
