Google’s Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, becoming the fastest-growing product in the company’s history.

CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on August 11. Gemini is now the 14th Google product to cross the 1 billion-user mark.

The milestone puts Gemini at a similar scale to OpenAI’s ChatGPT app. ChatGPT crossed 1 billion global monthly active app users in May, according to Sensor Tower data reported by Reuters in June.

Gemini’s user base has expanded quickly over the past year. At Google I/O in May 2025, the app had more than 400 million monthly users. That figure climbed above 750 million by the end of 2025, reached more than 900 million in May 2026, and passed 950 million during Google’s second-quarter earnings update in July.

Google has integrated Gemini across Android and its wider product ecosystem while continuing to add models and features such as Gemini 3.5 Flash, which focuses partly on coding and autonomous agent tasks.

The 1 billion figure applies specifically to the Gemini app. It does not include people accessing Google’s AI through other products. AI Mode in Google Search, for example, separately surpassed 1 billion monthly users earlier this year.

Google also revealed more details about how people use Gemini.

Around 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini using voice. One in five Gemini Live interactions also involves more than voice, with users sharing their screens or live camera feeds for real-time assistance.

Gemini generates more than 150 million images every day, while 38% of requests from students include an attachment. Google also says Gemini can automate actions across more than 40 popular Android apps.

The app has also gained significant traction on Apple devices, with Google reporting more than 100 million active Gemini users on iOS. Mac users, meanwhile, submit prompts about twice as frequently as users on other platforms.

The milestone comes shortly before Google’s Made by Google event, where the company is expected to introduce additional Gemini-powered features across its Pixel devices.
