Google has renamed its AI note-taking and research app NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook.

The company said the app will remain a standalone product, but it will now work more closely with the wider Google ecosystem, including the Gemini app and Google Search. Google announced the change on July 16.

Gemini Notebook started as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023.

Google later released it more widely as NotebookLM, positioning it as an AI tool that helps users understand, summarize, and organize their own source material. According to Google, more than 30 million people and over 600,000 organizations now use the product.

The new name brings the app closer to Google’s Gemini branding, but Google said it will continue to function as a dedicated research tool.

Google said Gemini Notebook will do more across its AI ecosystem.

Users can already create and access notebooks inside the Gemini app, with cross-app syncing between Gemini and the standalone Gemini Notebook experience. Google also plans to bring notebooks directly into AI Mode in Search.

This means users will eventually be able to access their notebook-based research more easily across Gemini and Google Search, instead of keeping it limited to one separate app.

Along with the rebrand, Google is rolling out a new secure cloud computer feature for Gemini Notebook.

The feature lets every notebook write and execute code natively. Google says this will help users perform deeper data analysis based on their uploaded sources.

The update is available now for Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google said it will roll out to all Pro users on the web over the coming weeks.

Google has been expanding NotebookLM beyond basic note-taking.

The app can already help users turn notes and sources into formats such as audio summaries, video summaries, and other generated study or research outputs. Google says the new code execution feature will enable more advanced output formats and deeper analysis.

The rename also makes Google’s product strategy clearer. Instead of treating NotebookLM as a separate experiment, Google is now placing it directly under the Gemini family while keeping it available as a standalone app.

Gemini Notebook is available through the existing NotebookLM experience.

The secure cloud computer update is rolling out first to AI Ultra and supported Workspace business users. Pro users on the web will get access in the coming weeks. Google has not given an exact date for when notebooks will appear inside AI Mode in Search.
