WhatsApp has started testing view-once text messages. As the name suggests, these messages can only be viewed once by the recipient. After the recipient opens them once, the messages will disappear.

Previously, the view once feature was only available to images and videos, but it will now reach regular text messages as well.

WhatsApp initially started testing this feature on Android earlier this month. The same feature is now being tested on iOS.

To use the feature, users will need to long-tap the Send button. WhatsApp will then show an option to send as a view once. Once selected, the message will be sent as a one-time text message.

View once text messages will work in both one-to-one chats and group chats. However, they will not be available on channels.

The feature is not currently available in public beta. It is only being tested internally by WhatsApp developers.

This view once featured a different feature from another feature uncovered in May. That feature allows users to set a message to expire after a specific amount of time.

The new feature only lets the recipient view a message once before it disappears.
