Valve has officially revealed the pricing for its new Steam Machine, a pre-built gaming PC designed to function like a console in the living room instead of a traditional desktop setup.

However, the device comes with a price tag that is more than double the cost of a typical gaming console.

The official prices are:

The Steam Machine will go on sale on June 29, and customers can register for one through Valve’s online store .

The pricing announcement arrived alongside reviews from several publications that tested the device before launch. The Verge described the Steam Machine as a high-quality product with gaming performance that is roughly comparable to Sony’s PlayStation 5.

While that performance is still solid, the comparison highlights the price difference. The PlayStation 5 currently sells for $599 and was first launched six years ago. However, the Steam Machine offers access to a much larger library of PC games and can perform other PC-related tasks for users who are comfortable with more advanced features.

According to the report, Valve likely had little choice but to price the Steam Machine above $1,000. PC hardware costs have risen sharply due to growing demand for AI data center infrastructure, a situation referred to as “RAMageddon.”

A global memory chip shortage is also affecting the technology industry. Apple CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged that the shortage will increase the prices of Apple products. The PlayStation 5 has also become $100 more expensive than it was when it first launched.

Overall, Valve appears to have released a strong gaming device, but it has entered the market during a particularly challenging period for hardware pricing.
