The Upper Kohistan district administration has introduced precautionary measures to reduce the risk of loss of life and property amid an increased threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), as rising temperatures accelerate snowmelt in the region.
Upper Kohistan Deputy Commissioner Azizullah Jan said on Friday that the administration has activated response plans in vulnerable areas and is conducting community awareness sessions to prepare residents for possible emergencies.
He said the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a GLOF warning for Kohistan valid until May 31, warning that heavy rainfall and extreme heat could trigger flash floods in upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Officials advised travellers moving between Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially through Kandia Valley and adjoining link roads, to remain alert due to the risk of sudden flooding and road blockages.
The deputy commissioner said the district administration is on high alert, with departments including Rescue 1122 instructed to stay fully prepared for emergency response.
He added that a monitoring team visited Kandia Valley, inspected GLOF early warning systems installed in the area, and urged local communities to relocate to safer locations along with livestock if necessary.
Authorities also instructed police personnel stationed along the Karakoram Highway to warn tourists and travellers about potential hazards in GLOF-prone zones.
Officials said residents can contact emergency helplines in case of any incident as the situation remains under close watch.
