The Punjab transport department has ordered a reduction in public transport fares following a cut in diesel prices announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with authorities and transporters meeting at Transport House to finalize the decision.
During the meeting, transporters agreed to reduce fares by 5 percent after consultation and formally announced the cut. According to the Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority, new fare lists will be prepared and displayed the same day, and the revised fares will take effect immediately.
Rana Mohsin said strict action will be taken against transporters who fail to display updated fare lists or violate the notified rates. The development follows the federal government’s decision to reduce diesel prices by Rs. 32.12 per liter for the week ending April 24, bringing the ex-depot price of high-speed diesel to Rs. 353.42 per liter from Rs. 385.54.
The reduction came after easing global oil prices following a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which led to a sharp decline in international fuel prices. Diesel, widely used in freight transport, has a direct impact on transport fares and inflation, prompting provincial authorities to pass on relief to commuters.
