Two police personnel were martyred on Monday after a speeding dumper truck crashed into a police van on the M9 Motorway within the limits of Gadap City police station, officials said.
According to Malir police, a patrolling police mobile engaged in snap checking was hit by a speeding dumper travelling from Hyderabad to Karachi.
Constable Wajid and Sub-Inspector Sahib Dad Solangi were martyred on the spot due to the impact, a police spokesperson confirmed.
The driver of the dumper has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated against him, the spokesperson added.
Motorway police also confirmed the incident, stating that the police vehicle was parked on the side of the road when it was struck by the heavy vehicle.
Edhi sources said the bodies of the martyred officers were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
The incident comes amid rising road accidents involving heavy vehicles in Karachi. Earlier, on February 13, a major crash on the same M9 Motorway involving an oil tanker and a passenger bus killed 12 people and injured six others.
Officials and hospital data indicate that nearly 500 people were killed and 4,879 were injured in road accidents in Karachi in 2024, with reckless driving and heavy traffic vehicles identified as key contributing factors.
