While Sony is increasing prices for the PlayStation 5, new leaks suggest the PlayStation 6 may avoid a similar price hike. Instead, Sony could reduce some of the console’s hardware capabilities to keep pricing lower or similar to current models.
The information comes from recent leaks and should be treated cautiously, as Sony has not officially confirmed any details. During an earnings call, Sony executives said the company has not finalized a launch date for the next-generation console.
According to reports, memory shortages may still continue by the time the PS6 launches. One possible way for Sony to reduce production costs would be to lower the console’s memory specifications, including reducing the memory bus and total VRAM.
The claims were shared by AMD leaker KeplerL2 on the NeoGAF forums. Sony has not publicly discussed or confirmed the information.
Earlier leaks suggested the PS6 could feature 30GB of RAM, but newer claims point to a lower 24GB VRAM setup with a 128-bit memory bus to keep costs under control.
KeplerL2 claimed these changes “would be a $60 BOM reduction” even without major changes in GDDR7 memory prices. The leaker also said the adjustments could improve chip production yields by allowing Sony to handle memory controller defects more efficiently.
According to the leak, Sony would not need to redesign the APU to make these changes. Simply disabling one memory controller could reportedly achieve the cost savings.
Reducing the memory bus would lower the console’s maximum performance and bandwidth potential, but it would also make the hardware cheaper to produce.
For comparison, the PlayStation 5 currently uses a 256-bit memory bus and 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. The rumored PS6 setup would likely mean the new console would not offer a massive generational jump in graphics and processing power.
However, the leaked specifications still suggest the PS6 would outperform the PlayStation 5 Pro. The PS5 Pro reportedly uses the same VRAM and memory bus specifications but includes an extra 2GB of DDR5 RAM dedicated to the operating system, allowing games to access more main memory.
Sony has not announced when the PlayStation 6 will launch. Speculation about the release window ranges from 2027 to 2030, although many experts believe a 2027 launch now appears unlikely.
For now, players hoping to upgrade soon may have to wait longer.
