Sony has confirmed that PlayStation game developers and publishers will still be able to order additional physical copies of eligible games even after the company stops supporting new disc releases in 2028.
The latest information makes it clear that publishers can continue ordering physical copies of PlayStation games, provided those titles were originally released on disc before the January 2028 deadline.
According to a report by Game File , Sony informed PlayStation developers and publishers through a private message that they “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.”
The clarification follows Sony’s earlier announcement on the PlayStation Blog, where the company said that ending support for physical game discs would have “no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”
Game File also reported that Sony told publishers the ordering process for physical discs will change, although the company has not yet shared details about the new system.
The reported changes come as Sony has already invested millions of dollars into repurposing its disc manufacturing facility in Salzburg, Austria. Instead of producing game discs, the factory is being converted to manufacture optical microlenses.
In the same message, Sony reportedly told publishers that it will also “provide publishers with the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes.” However, the company has not yet explained how that program will work.
While the move could help address concerns about players being forced to purchase games only through Sony’s online store, the broader end of physical PlayStation game discs is still expected to have significant implications for the gaming industry.
