Pakistan Customs has foiled an attempt to import restricted cigarette tipping paper that was allegedly misdeclared as “poster paper in reels” at the Collectorate of Customs Appraisement (West), Karachi.

According to customs officials, the importer submitted documentation declaring the consignment as poster paper. However, during scrutiny, authorities became suspicious and initiated a detailed examination of the shipment.

Customs officials said a certificate purportedly issued by international inspection company SGS was also submitted to support the import. Subsequent verification and examination revealed that the document was allegedly forged and had been used in an attempt to bypass import restrictions.

Laboratory analysis later confirmed that the imported material was cigarette tipping paper rather than the declared poster paper, establishing a case of misdeclaration. Following the findings, customs authorities reassessed the goods under the correct tariff classification and initiated legal proceedings against the importer and the clearing agent.

An FIR has been registered on charges including misdeclaration and forgery, while a second container linked to the same importer has also been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Pakistan Customs said it remains committed to enforcing import regulations, preventing revenue leakage, and taking action against attempts to circumvent trade and customs laws.
