Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) has introduced several new PhD programs in medical and dental sciences, marking a major step toward strengthening specialized healthcare research in Pakistan.

According to a university source, the newly launched programs include PhDs in Surgery, Medicine, Prosthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Dental Public Health, Dental Materials, Cardiology, and Pharmacology.

The university said the initiative is a landmark achievement, as several of these programs are being offered as standalone PhD degrees for the first time in Pakistan.

Until now, doctoral education in these areas has largely remained limited to broader fields such as basic medical sciences or general dentistry, while clinical specialties were mostly covered through professional qualifications.

SZABMU said the new programs reflect its focus on academic innovation and its efforts to align with global trends in specialized research. The initiative is also aimed at improving academic scholarship, evidence-based practice, policy development, and technological advancement in healthcare.

In another major development, the School of Dentistry at SZABMU has received approval from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council for all its clinical MDS programs, including Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, and Periodontology.

The university said these programs are expected to support capacity building, promote high-quality research, and help produce a new generation of clinician-scientists and healthcare educators capable of addressing complex healthcare challenges.
