The Punjab government has decided to convert 177 unmanned railway level crossings across the province into manned crossings, with an initial allocation of Rs. 9.7 billion to improve public safety and reduce accidents.

The decision was discussed during a meeting between Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb at the Railways Headquarters.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Punjab government and Pakistan Railways following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in April. Both sides reviewed plans to improve railway infrastructure, expand public transport, and enhance coordination between the provincial government and Pakistan Railways.

Under the initiative, the Punjab government will take responsibility for converting all 177 unmanned railway crossings into manned ones by deploying staff to operate and monitor them. Officials said the project is expected to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians while significantly reducing accidents.

The two sides also reviewed plans to introduce diesel multiple unit (DMU) train services on eight local railway routes in Punjab. An MoU for the project is being prepared, while survey work has already begun.

In addition, the meeting discussed efforts to improve the surroundings of railway properties. The Punjab government has allocated funds to develop 40 parks along the Shahdara–Raiwind railway corridor as part of an urban beautification and environmental improvement initiative.
