Ahead of World Environment Day 2026, the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has intensified its crackdown on plastic pollution, announcing a complete ban on plastic bags below 75 microns in the coming weeks.
The move is part of a broader initiative to establish plastic-free zones in major city markets across the province.
Official data shows a sharp increase in enforcement activity in 2026. From January 1 to April 27, the EPA conducted 3,612 inspections, confiscated over 937,000kg of plastic bags, issued 189 notices, imposed fines worth Rs3 million, sealed 26 premises, and registered seven FIRs.
Compared to 2025, enforcement has become more targeted and aggressive. While last year saw over 113,000 inspections, the total plastic seized in 2026 has already more than doubled, indicating a shift towards intelligence-based operations against major violators.
District-wise data reveals that Multan led in seizures with 17,989kg of plastic bags confiscated, followed by Rawalpindi with 10,848kg. Lahore recorded the highest penalties, amounting to Rs816,000.
EPA Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh said authorities have adopted a zero-tolerance policy, focusing on repeat offenders and illegal supply chains. He added that strict actions, including sealing premises and registering FIRs, are now being enforced without warning.
Meanwhile, Silwat Saeed said the government is combining enforcement with public awareness and market reforms to promote sustainable alternatives.
She emphasised that the ban on sub-75 micron plastic bags will be strictly implemented in urban commercial centres, with plastic-free zones serving as model areas.
Officials acknowledged ongoing challenges in rural and peri-urban areas but expressed confidence that stricter enforcement and policy measures will significantly reduce plastic waste in the coming months.
The campaign marks a major step in Punjab’s environmental strategy, aiming to ensure long-term behavioural change and a cleaner environment.
